WHO IS GRAIG THOMPSON

Craig Matthew Thompson (born September 21, 1975) is an American graphic novelist best known for his books Good-bye, Chunky Rice (1999), Blankets (2003), Carnet de Voyage (2004), Habibi (2011), and Space Dumplins (2015).

Thompson has received four Harvey Awards, three Eisner Awards, and two Ignatz Awards. In 2007, his cover design for the Menomena album Friend and Foe received a Grammy nomination for Best Recording Package.

Style and influences
Thompson has acknowledged the influence of graphic artists Taro Yashima, Daniel Clowes, Chris Ware, and Joe Sacco.[4] Thompson has said that, in his composition process, pages are initially composed “in a very illegible form, a shorthand where words and pictures blur into alien scribbles … I’m working with words and pictures right from the beginning, but the picture might not look any different from a letter, because they’re just a bunch of scribbles on a page.” Then he rewrites those sketches into “a detailed thumbnail with clear handwriting, and that way I can go back and edit.” Even on his long works, Thompson drafts the entire book in ballpoint pen before beginning the final brush-inked version.[12]

Habibi is a deeply romantic story that explores and celebrates the beauty and cruelty, the complexity and depths of the Islamic world. Set in a mythical Middle East, at once contemporary and timeless, Habibi is a parable about our relationship to the natural world and the common heritage of Christianity and Islam. The magic of storytelling allows us to see the fragility embedded in cruelty, to understand how beauty can preserve us from destruction and how love can save us from loss of hope.

Weeding and harvesting ginseng, a medicinal herb that fetched huge profits in China, funded Craig’s youthful obsession with comic books. Comics in turn, allowed him to escape his rural, working class trappings. Now, for the first time in his career, Thompson is working in serial form, in a bimonthly comic book series. Part memoir, part travelogue, part essay, Ginseng Roots explores class divide, agriculture, holistic healing, the 300-year-long trade relationship between China and North America, childhood labor, and the bond between two brothers.
